Living in the new quarter
After the annual garden fair „Landesgartenschau 2018“, commencing in a different German city, the Hubland was announced to become a new quarter for the fast-growing city of Würzburg. A year prior the former occupants of the area, the American Military, had moved out. Hence the city had plenty of time for in-depth planning of the new district which used to inhabit the American military airbase since the end of World War 2.
The urban planning team focused on creating a space that feels like a green city, full of lush park areas and outdoor spaces and with a well-balanced mix between rental apartments and property in mind.
Studio Riva was appointed by a young family to design their flat with bespoke built-in furniture and lighting design. For the family of four storage space was a major focus.
The house, their condo is situated in, is a timber construction. As a part of the architectural concept, the constructive beams are visible in the interior and they are becoming an element of the space. To create a homogenous and natural feeling, the other surfaces e.g. the floor and furniture finishes were chosen carefully. This way the natural changes of the timber surfaces entwined with the overall material concept and design will stand the test of time.
